Governance
The board emphasises strategic leadership rather than administrative detail, has a clear distinction of board and staff roles, concentrates on the future rather than the past or present, and is pro-active rather than reactive.

Management
The board delegates all authority and accountability for the day-to-day operational organisation of the school to the Principal.

Education Act 1989, Section 75 and 76
The legal responsibility of boards of trustees is determined by Section 75 of the Education Act 1989:

s.75 Boards to control management of schools – Except to the extent that any enactment or the general law of New Zealand provides otherwise, a school’s board has complete discretion to control the management of the school as it thinks fit.
s.76 Principals – A school’s principal is the board’s chief executive in relation to the school’s control and management. Except to the extent that any enactment or the general law of New Zealand provides otherwise, the principal – Shall comply with the board’s general policy directions; and Subject to paragraph (a) of this subsection, has complete discretion to manage as the principal thinks fit the school’s day to day administration.

The School and its Community
St Peters College, an integrated Roman Catholic co-educational school of approximately 370 Yr 7-13 students with a co-educational boarding establishment, offers an education with a special character. The attached co-educational boarding establishment is not integrated and is run separately from the College, by its own Board that is responsible to the Bishop of the Diocese. The College was founded in 1969, after 17 years of fundraising by the Catholic community of Otago and Southland. The Rosminian Institute of Charity and the Sisters of Mercy assisted in the foundation of the school. The school’s motto Charity fulfils the law (Romans 13) is also the motto of the Rosmini family and the Rosminians.

The school provides high quality educational opportunities for its students and as a result is well supported by the communities it serves. Because of the reputation the school has developed (and backed up by a recent ERO report) the board is able to attract high quality staff.

The buildings are set amidst 10 hectares of landscaped grounds and playing fields, which provide a very pleasant setting. Learning occurs in modern classrooms backed up with a wide range of specialist learning areas.

St Peters College has a number of sporting resources (gymnasium, fields and courts) which are occasionally used by the The College Motto Charity Fulfils the Law underpins our vision for young people.
