Our Diocese
St Peter's College is one of two catholic schools found in the parish of Gore; the other being St Mary's Primary school. Both schools make up part of the wider Dunedin diocese.
The
Catholic Diocese of Dunedin website
provides a brief history of our diocese:
"By a brief, dated November 26, 1869, Pope Pius IX, withdrew the provinces of Otago and Southland, together with Stewart Island and the adjacent islands, from the diocese of Wellington and erected them as a new diocese, directing that the diocese should be called Dunedin and that the See should be in Dunedin. By another brief, of Dunedin, 1869, His Holiness appointed the Right Rev Patrick Moran, Vicar Apostolic of the Eastern Districts of the Cape of Good Hope, to be the first Bishop of the new See of Dunedin."
St Peter's has a very strong connection with our local parish and the Church of the Blessed Sacrament.
