Education Review Office Report - 2010  
In 2010 the hostel was the sole nominee in the southern region for a hostel demonstrating best practice. The report states the following:
  
"The Hostel is characterised by the emphasis on relationships, students’ welfare and learning, and effective leadership and management." 

Strengths of the hostel include:
  • clear expectations and routines for students to follow. 
  • senior student leadership in house competitions and hostel events. 
  • students’ academic progress closely monitored, including help with goal setting. 
  • age-appropriate expectations and monitoring of students’ homework. 
  • extensive consultation with parents and students. 
  • outcomes that indicate students are confident to express their views. 
  • several strategies to monitor student welfare and address any concerns or issues.
  • capable and confident hostel staff who are also very well managed. 
  • very good record keeping for routines, individual students and any disciplinary issues. 
  • an entrepreneurial approach to fundraising for hostel development. 
  • the school special character and Maori values reflected in hostel practices. 
  • close liaison between the hostel and school.
