Education Review Office Report - 2010
In 2010 the hostel was the sole nominee in the southern region for a hostel demonstrating best practice. The report states the following:
"The Hostel is characterised by the emphasis on relationships, students’ welfare and learning, and effective leadership and management."
Strengths of the hostel include:
clear expectations and routines for students to follow.
senior student leadership in house competitions and hostel events.
students’ academic progress closely monitored, including help with goal setting.
age-appropriate expectations and monitoring of students’ homework.
extensive consultation with parents and students.
outcomes that indicate students are confident to express their views.
several strategies to monitor student welfare and address any concerns or issues.
capable and confident hostel staff who are also very well managed.
very good record keeping for routines, individual students and any disciplinary issues.
an entrepreneurial approach to fundraising for hostel development.
the school special character and Maori values reflected in hostel practices.
close liaison between the hostel and school.
