40th Jubilee
Unfortunately, a widely advertised meeting held in June 2007 to determine if
there was enough interest in hosting a 40th jubilee did not attract enough
workers to make it feasible. We look now instead to 2018-2019 when our
50th may be celebrated. This does not of course preclude year groups from
arranging their own gatherings.

A good bedtime read
In 1999 St Peter's celebrated its thirtieth jubilee - and as part of the celebrations
past pupil Donna Richardson and former teacher Father Aidan Cunningham wrote a brief
history of the College. It is a lively story and full of the anecdotes that are so
characteristic of our school - it is available here.

- I am certainly interested in making myself "contactable" by my old class. I
was a third form foundation pupil at St Peters in 1969. I left after 7th form in 1973. I
was chair of what was then a school council in my 6th and 7th form years and I have fond
memories of that group. The 7th form class was also a great bunch of people - none of whom
I'm sad to say, I have maintained contact with. From St Peters I went to Otago University
where I worked through the degrees to a PhD in Social Anthropology. I taught anthropology
there for a while before moving to the Polytechnic where I now manage the post graduate
degree programmes in the occupational therapy department. I also teach anthropology and
research here. I am married to Jayashree Panjabi - also a former Gore'ite (went to Gore
High School a couple of years after me). She works as a manager of public programmes at
Otago Museum. We met in Dunedin in 1979 and have been together since. We have two
children, Ella, who is nearly nine and Nick, who is six. We live in the countryside above
Sawyers Bay, ten minutes out of the city.

As a former and founder pupil of St Peter's College I was very pleased to find these pages
and I must offer congratulations for their appealing and easy to read layout. Reading the
school's history brought back many memories as I came across familiar names and events. I
was involved with the early production of "The Rock" (I drew illustrations) and
I had a starring role in the school production of "Anne Frank". I think it was
this experience that lead on to my present career as a Lighting Technician at the Sydney
Opera House where I have been for over twenty years. (Time flies). Like many other former
pupils I went to Otago University where I completed an Arts degree followed many years
later by a Post Grad. Diploma in Arts Management at U.T.S. Sydney. I have had a recent
career change with the arrival of my young son Lucas but still work part-time in theatre.
I could not wish for him anything better than the enthusiasm and dedication of the
teachers in those early years of St Peters. People such as Father Hurdidge, Bro Tedesco
and Sister Andrew were an inspiration to me and many other pupils and I remember them
fondly and with gratitude. I will look forward to keeping up with news and events from
this page and maybe catch up with other former pupils.

I
am a past pupil (1982 - 1988) and I am just writing to say how much I have
thoroughly
enjoyed reading the St Peter's College newsletter which I
received
in the mail today. I have nothing but wonderful, fond memories of
my
time spent at St Peter's, and the great teachers (including yourself) who
gave
me the best possible education I think I could have had. It was great
to
see in the newsletter where some of my old teachers are now.
My
own two children, Bridget and Mark (ages 6 & 5), are currently attending
St
Mary's in Gore and I really look forward to the day they start at St
Peters
and I can once again visit and feel part of the place.
I
look forward very much to the next newsletter with news from the school.

Hi
Martin, you may or may not remember me (Dean Beale), but i have just found the web site,
so i thought id drop a note to you and say hi.
Id like
to thank you for tutoring me when i was studying for SC maths , had you not helped me
grasp the basics again, things would have been alot more difficult for me in my chosen
career path.
Glad to
see you are in charge now, interesting to see the names of teachers that taught me in the
past, bit of a memory jogger.
I have
been in Nelson since the 90`s having came up here to further my aircraft engineering
career (was hard in Southland to gain helicopter experiance), i have owned and recently
sold my own maintenance company, now I'm the Cheif Engineer for the new owners.
Im
married to Deanna Wallis (also past Student of St Peters) we have two children, Marcus
9yrs and Tayla 5yrs.
Have ran
into few past pupils from St Peters up here, so have pasted on the info.
Great to
see the school looking great, and if i lived in Gore my children would be sent there as i
believe the teaching standard was impeccable.
You can
email me here, or if you choose to put my details on the site then put the following

Trish,
Please do
add my name to the former students database. I've just finished looking over the
college home page, and enjoyed reading about the history and current events of the school.
I attended
from 1982 - 1988. I most enjoyed being part of the annual Eisteddfods and musicals
and in particular, loved my biology and history classes. Mark Febery, Art Santure,
Fr Cunningham and Martin Chamberlain were great teachers and I'm honoured to have been one
of their students.
I have been
working in the US as a registered nurse since 1993 (currently in Seattle) but have
imminent plans to return to New Zealand and, yes, probably live in Southland, to be near
my family.

You may or may not remember me, I an Gavin Jolly (Jock to some). I
signed up on a website for school friends and Trish Corcoran contacted
me and gave me some more information on the school. Things are looking good.
I thought you would like some information about what I am up to now.
I am married with 4 children, Allana (14), Liam & Finbar (5) and Taggart
(3). Liam and Finbar are twins but sadly Finbar died at 11 days old. My
wife Nikki is currently homeschooling our two sons Liam and Taggart
amongst all the other work she does.
We live in Lower Hutt and have done so for 8 years. Nikki was living
here when I met her)
Academically, I got an engineering degree from Canterbury (BE Civil) and
went to work at a company called ISP in Lower Hutt. I was there for 6-8
years (bad with dates) and then have gone out working for myself. I am
currently a self employed contractor but have been on long term contract
with the Wellington City Council for the past 2 years. Now I am a
Data/Systems/Business analyst. I work a lot with data and business logic
(not that it is always there).
My brothers:
Peter Jolly, is currently in Australia working as an Economist for the
National Australia Bank(?) heading up a research group. He is married
with 3 children.
Andrew Jolly is is Alexandra, married with 3 children. He has his own
plumbing business.
It seems like a whole world ago I was at St Peters. I enjoyed my time
there and I always appreciated you as a teacher. You were quite relaxed
in some areas but hard in the areas that mattered.
PS, the link on your homepage to the sitemap (the one at the bottom jsut
above the contact information, not the top one) links to a location on
your local computer (file:///C:/unzipped/stpetersgore/toc.htm).
Anyway, I am having a half day today as my wife is busy and I have to go
and get my son Taggart from kindy.
All the best.

Hi There,
I was a pupil at St
Peters from 1982-1988 when we left for Australia. I was sitting down
reminiscing about where I went to school and just how cold it was and I thought
I should look them up on the net and see if there are any familiar names or
face. I remember you struggling to try and teach me science (and Mrs Freebody)
exceptionally frustrating as I recall.
Well since 1988 I

Hi there,
Just visited the
website, very interesting reading, jogged a few brain cells.
I attended the
college from 83-88 forms 1-6.
Still living in
Mataura on a lifestyle block and happily married for 11 years.
Could you please
add my email address so if my old school mates want to contact me they can.
Cheers Donna Burr
(nee Botting)
PS. Is there any
way of you displaying old school photos on this site with names as I have
forgotten many.

Subject: Possible 2009 reunion |
|
Hi Martin,
I have been reading the May 2004 newsletter and I know that
reunions take a bit of organising and it won't be long until Feb 2009. I'm
quite happy to help out where I can if a group is put together to organise a
40th Reunion. It's been a long time since Bro. Ted taught us science,
geography, photography and field trip 101. A lot of water has passed under
the bridge since then. Some of us first day pupils will be close to fifty
years of age now and not getting any younger. 2009 would be a good
opportunity for a (hopefully) goodly crowd of past pupils to get together.
If I can be of any assistance please don't hesitate to ask.
Kindest regards,
Paul Holland
SPG 34
1969 - 1973.
P.S. a piece of trivia. I was a first day pupil and one of my
first teachers was Bro. Ted (a.k.a., "Snake" if my memory serves me
correctly). My brother in law was a first day pupil at Rosmini College up
in Jaffa land and his first teacher was Bro. Ted. Small world. |

Subject: AMAZING!! |

Dear Mr Chamberlain,
Well it's seems so right calling you
by your formal name , even now after so many years , I really have to laugh!
I was surprised to say the least by a Trish Corcoran , Obviously Tims
older sister, if I remember rightly, as to my details and to check out
your StPeters College web site; information highway, oh how lucky the
new generation is!
Anyway I have done so and checked it out and see your picture there and
it does ring home, as to the years since that we both have grown,
but I am so glad to see that you are running the school and are happy
in the elect of yourself , after all I do have fond memories of Physics
and Chemistry and you are deserving in your role at St Peters as you, in
my mind were one of the best!
Myself I did manage to move on to greener pastures, among all the doubt
;-) .
I moved to Christchurch on completion of my 7th year to study
Mechanical Engineering at Canterbury , on completion of that I moved to
Australia where I have been ever since.Working in the Underground Gold
Mining and development Industry , became bored of Engineerining.
I now of all things am a Deep Sea Saturation Diver working throughout
the world in various oil fields constructing oil and gas systems sub sea.
I am happily married to a Christchurch girl we have two daughters
Tynika (3) & Krishana (8) and are in the process of moving back to New
Zealand after 12 years, so have a lot to do at the moment , remembering
the cold will be a good start ! ;-)
I wish you all the best in your leadership roles and there is no doubt
in my mind that you are the person to sculpt young minds of tomorrow !!!
It seems a world ago that I attended St Peters and I have very fond
memories of my time there , even if I was distracting! , but the times
spent in your class were an absolute pleasure, you are much deserving of
the role appointed you.
All the best Martin.
Great Web Site, My Years At St Peters Exquisite!
Kind Regards

Hey Trish,
I got your email from coops regarding old students of the mighty
hostel, while I was travelling through asia so didn't really have time to
reply. I have just arrived in London where I plan to live for the next two
years, it is a wicked city with heaps of kiwis and aussies ect over here. Still
looking for a job at the moment, need to earn some pounds to travel through
europe.
I hope the hostel is still going strong, was a wicked place when I look back
on it now.
Cheers Harry

Hi Martin
I was
pleasantly surprised when I opened my email this evening forwarded from my twin
Simon. We were the Furness twins Tim and Simon and we boarded at St Peters in
the old house St Pauls, across the road from the school, in 1972.
I have fond
memories of my time at St Peters and still have that year's three issues of THE
ROCK, the school magazine that you will well remember.
Simon is living in
Invercargill and lives on a property at Lorneville with wife Kaye and two boys
Shannon and Andrew.
I am living in
Geelong Australia, have been here for some twenty years now. I came here for six
months and forgot to go home! !!
I work at Ford
Australia car plant as a maintenance electrician, am married to wife Lynne and
have a 12 year old son Taylen.
Please add me to
your past pupils list. I can't tell you what a thrill it was to receive the
newsletter today

Hi
I have just had an
enjoyable little trip down memory lane looking at the photos on the School web
site and the Old friends web site . I noticed that a few people gave a brief
outline of what they have been up to since school. Here is me. Our family
shifted to Dunedin. I left St Peter's in Form 5 as and lost contact with my St
Peters school mates at that stage. Mary Otto who had been at St Peters was at my
new school in Dunedin(Moreau College).I worked in Dunedin for 10 years at Arthur
Barnett Ltd before leaving to go to Uni. For 10 years I had a variety of jobs,
uni student, school chaplain, parish worker all sorts of stuff leading to
becoming a school teacher. I taught at Francis Douglas Memorial College for 4
years before moving to Western Australia where I taught in the Aboriginal
Community of Balgo, which is in the Great Sandy desert. From there I moved to
Broome WA for 3 years worked as an Religious Education Consultant working for
the Catholic Education Office of WA, Broome Regional Office. This year I
returned to NZ and now work for the Diocese of Palmerston North where I am the
Secondary and Tertiary RE Advisor. Well that's me in a nut shell. Love to here
what my class mates have been up to.

Martin..It is
indeed heartening to see the college has such a thriving network of past pupils.
Well done.
I would appreciate
being added to your "little list"!

Kia ora Marty,
By the comments on
the school web site it looks as if your efforts have shifted the centre of the
world from Orawia to Gore. Well done. I was never convinced about the Orawia
thing. You also need congratulating on your uncanny ability at the age of 17 to
quite correctly predict that there was indeed no good reason to ever leave
Southland. (or St Peters ). For the readers info I was lucky enough to have
spent my 7th form year at St Peters in 1974. Kevin Forsman and myself were the
first exchange students from Rosmini College to attend St Peters and began a
bit of a tradition. Is the student echange still happening? I see Kathy O'Neil
has fond memories of that great theatrical work "The Diary of Anne Frank". I was
honoured to have played her father,Otto in that show. Unlike her my theatrical
career came to a crashing halt a few years later with a devastating rejection
after auditioning for of all things "The Diary of Anne Frank".
My health never
recovered from the experience of Father Buchner's spam meals. I was 32 before I
completed a years work without time of for sickness. What a party that was. I
eventually received a gift of a kidney from my young brother Sean and have
enjoyed 20 years of organ transplanted bliss. I repayed him in 2003 with a Gold
medal I won for white water salom kayaking at the World Transplant Games in
France. Organ transplantation works!!! Tick the organ donor box.
I have been married
to Kahoa for 27 years and we have 4 daughters aged 24 to 17. My goal was always
to get a degree by age 40. I was late by 2 years. I am teaching Building and
Construction at Onehunga High School in Auckland trying to turn out a few
tradesmen.
Add me to the
mailing list. Thanks for your efforts.

Subject: Newsletter |
Hi Martin
I received the
latest newsletter today by luck as the new postie knew me. Please can you change
my contact address to Cheltenham Court,
607 Market St Sth, Hastings or
P O Box 2288, Stortford Lodge,
Hastings.
I was a pupil at St
Peters 1973-79 under the maiden name of McGillen. Father Willett was headmaster
when I left.
I do have fond
memories of my years there but moving away as soon as I left school (unlike my
younger sister Christine) I did lose contact with a lot of classmates. My
parents remained in Gore so I had many trips there, meeting up with probably the
only one of my year that stayed there, Mark La Hood. Family connections had me
meeting up again with Dennis O’Connor a couple of Christmas’ ago and I do keep
up with what the Marshall’s
are doing through Faye, but that is probably about all.
When my Mum passed
away nearly three years ago, Dad moved back to his home town of
Temuka so unfortunately I now do not seem to venture that
far south.
I was amazed to see
how many staff have remained for so many years! The only staff member I have met
up with since leaving Gore would be Kate Leebody at the Netball World Cup in
Christchurch.
As you will see by
my signature, I am a mortgage broker, owning a new Adam Parore franchise. After
spending 20 years with The National Bank I now love being my own boss! I have
been married to Ron for 23 years and we have two siblings (can’t call them
children anymore) Kahlea 21 and Kieran 15.
I would love to
reminisce with any old classmates if they fancy, so please load my email under
the contacts.
All the very best.

Hi my name is
Pauline Patrick (nee Brown) and I went to St Peter's from 1977 till early 1979.
I left St Peters because my mother (Pat Brown) passed away and I went to live
with my older brother Tony in Timaru. My sister Maria also went to St Peters
although briefly. We had many cousins at St Peters including O'Connor's,
O'Brien's, Larkings and Yate's.
I am married to
Lance and have 2 children, Matthew 10 and Tayla 7. We live on a dairy farm in
Waiau Pa (Auckland Region) and I work as a Teacher Aide in a special needs
school. Next year I am looking at going back to school to get my teaching
degree.
I would love to
hear from anyone who was in my classes.
God Bless

Subject: ITS OUR YEARS 40TH SO HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO U ALL
I REMEMBER HOW WE CELEBRATED BIRTHDAYS DO U??????? |
Hi Mr Chamberlain
I do remember your
name from St Peters but cant remember if u taught me or not. I remember E.J.,
Mr tyne, Mr Cahill, PJ Owens, Mr Hillyard PE teacher, Bro Ted Sisters Helen and
Barbara who followed me to Moreau College in Dunedin which i couldnt believe and
i remember her saying at assembly in Dunedin about having a former pupil from
Gore been at Moreau with her and everyone knew it was me but i look back today
and think "if only i had listened more" but we learn from our past times. I
found out that Mr Cahill had actually taught my older brother here in Dunedin a
few yeas before i had him in Gore, and Mr Connelly where have they all gone???
I was no saint at
school but i know i enjoyed my years there attending the first intake of girl
boarders at Gore High School Hostel attending St Peters that was in 1980 i think
there was about 10 of us. I lived in Waikaia and when i first started the first
person i meet was Joanne Gilkston or Gilbertson she lived on the Waikaia to Gore
Bus run and i think she was 6thform in 1979 she showed me around i was so
grateful to her she introduced me to i think it was James Cooper he lived nearer
to Gore and was the same year as me he went out with Bronwyn Lee.
I know 1980 was a
tough year for our form losing Michael and Ranui and then a year later David
Andrews by which time i had left Waikaia and gone back to Dunedin and was unable
to come back for Daves farewell then Daves Dad Fred died in a freak accident
with one of his Trucks so there was good and bad and sad times but thank u all
for the memories and the best school i attended now that i can admitt it Good
Luck in the future and i hope i can make it to the 40th in 2009
