A number of students took up the opportunity to compete in many of the challenges offered at the College during MathsWeek. ”Guess the number of jelly beans in the jar” was a favourite with students from all year levels, and “Design a Postcard” was particularly popular with the junior students. Winners of the various competitions will be announced during an upcoming Monday assembly.
Year 7 and 8 students all participated in a Quiz Competition and with the aid of the senior students as markers, had a great period putting their problem solving skills to good use. Some of these students will be fortunate to be selected for the Southland-wide SMAC Maths Competition later this term, so this was a good taster for them.
Year 9 and 10 students enjoyed a period completing the “Great Race” – QR codes were positioned around the school grounds. Students had to find all these and correctly answer the mathematics question embedded in the code.
MathsWeek was also showcased in the display area in the foyer of the Hall. Winning postcards from previous years, calculators from past and present as well as many mathematics and statistics ‘tools’ made up the display.
Thanks to all the department staff for their organisation as well as all the students for their participation in what was a week of mathematical fun!!
