On September 2nd the Senior A team set off on their way to the New Zealand Secondary Schools’ Southland Island Netball Tournament. We broke our trip by stopping in Oamaru and staying at St Kevin’s for the night. We set off the next morning on our way to Christchurch; that afternoon we went to the courts and had one last practise before it was game time. We settled in to our motel which was directly across the road from the Riccarton Mall perhaps was a little too convenient for the girls. Day 1 was a very important day of pool play, with Central Southland first up and even with our 7 goal comeback we lost by 1, which was gutting. Our next two games were then against St Margaret’s where we lost by 16 and Roncalli which we won. This put us third in our pool, narrowly missing out on making the top 16 (due to our loss against Central Southland). We were then put in to another pool where we won all 3 games so were put in the 17-20th playoffs. We lost to Craighead which put us in the playoff for 19-20th, and with a good win against Waimea to finish, we were placed 19th. The girls never gave up throughout the tournament, even towards the end when everyone’s bodies were tired and sore. Overall the team was really happy with this effort and had enjoyed their week away. A huge thank you to Dana Bond and Carolyn Hunter for taking us away, and to Ms McPhee and Mrs Conlan for organising everything and keeping everyone posted on the results, we couldn’t have done it without you all. Also thankyou to all the parents who came up to watch; it was really good to have lots of support from the sideline.
