Congratulations to the following St Peter’s students who are team members of the Eastern Southland Hockey U13 Collier team: Laura Perkins, Lucy Wilson, Eden McPhail, Anika Smith and Bethany Nicholson. The girls headed to Hamilton in the second week of the holidays to compete in the NZ Hockey Tournament. Like the Hatch boys, the girls drew a really tough pool with 4 of the teams in their pool finishing in the top 10.
They opened the tournament with a draw with Wellington (0-0) followed by a loss to Hawkes Bay (4-1). On the Tuesday they faced Waikato, losing 4-1, but the girls played a lovely game and the Waikato team said it was their most enjoyable game to date. Wednesday saw a 3-1 win to Horowhenua in the morning. Their next game was against Canterbury B who had just taken a win against Waikato. The girls dug deep keeping Canterbury B scoreless until the 43rd minute. The final score was a 1 all draw meaning Waikato and Hawkes Bay moved to top of the table while Canterbury dropped to 3rd.
Thursday’s game against Mid-Canterbury was interesting with a down pour in the middle forcing the girls to stand on the sideline for 20 minutes until the other turf was free. They went out to defend a penalty corner which they did successfully, coming away with a 2-1 win.
Friday’s game, aged the Coach Janine Smith and her Assistant Annabelle McPhail, when the girls struggled to perform against Waikato B. With 2 seconds on the clock, Lucy Weller scored to even the match and force the game into drop offs. After 10 minutes the game was still a draw and so were forced into strokes. Waikato B led the strokes until the end when our last one went in to even the game once again. The game was then forced into sudden death. Eastern missed their first shoot out and then Eden McPhail scored winning the game. Lots of emotion flowed – what a gutsy effort!!!
Saturday’s bottom 8 final against Otago was won 4-0 completing a great tournament and coming away with the trophy for this section. The team was also awarded the “Friendliest Team Trophy” which highlights what a great bunch of girls you all are. It was last won by Eastern Southland in 2004.
