Wow! What a week of celebrations we have had. It was wonderful to be in the audience at the Stage Challenge last Friday night where St Peter’s College was awarded six Excellence Awards and a 3rd place. The seniors involved in this event worked extremely hard and certainly earned the praise and accolades they received. One of the more exciting things for them was the ability to work alongside and get to know the members of the junior school who were on stage with them or working in the backstage crew. Truly, this was a very good celebration of Community.
A number of staff and students attended the 40th anniversary celebration of Fr Aidan Cunningham’s ordination as a Rosminian priest. Fr Aidan was on the staff of St Peter’s College for more than twenty years, retiring in 1994. We were made to feel very welcome by the parishioners of Sacred Heart Parish in Dunedin where Fr Aidan is now the Parish Priest.
The Southland Secondary Schools’ Cross Country was held on Wednesday. Huge congratulations must go to Joshua Potter who won the boys U13 race and Maggie Nicholson who won the girls U14 race. This is a great achievement in a strongly contested competition. We also congratulate Maggie McPhail who has been selected for the Southland Under-19 Netball team and Ella Brown who has been selected for the Southland Under-17 Netball team. After being part of Stage Challenge on Friday night, Kirby Cleland then went on to win the Southland Highest Scoring Couple at the Festival of Dance in Gore at the weekend, along with winning most of her sections. It is heartening to see our students giving their absolute best both in and out of the classroom. Well Done!
The Senior Ball is to be held at the Town and Country Stadium tomorrow evening and there is a real buzz around the school, as the students eagerly anticipate this event. As has happened for the last few years, there will be a ball parade prior to the Ball in the St Peter’s College Hall. This is always a wonderful start to a special evening
To continue celebrating as a community, there will be Mass at the St Peter’s College Chapel this Sunday at 5pm for all who would like to attend; students, families and community members are all welcome. This may be a good alternative for those needing a wee sleep-in after the Ball on Saturday night! I look forward to seeing you there.
We thank you for setting us in communities:
for families who nurture our becoming,
for friends who love us by choice,
for companions at work, who share our burdens and daily tasks,
for strangers who welcome us into their midst,
for people from other lands who call us to grow in understanding,
for children who lighten our moments with delight,
for the unborn, who offer us hope for the future.
For these and all blessings, we give you thanks, eternal, loving God,
through Jesus Christ we pray. Amen.
