During the second weekend of April, students from St Peters will travel to Invercargill attempting to win their third consecutive Bishop’s Shield. The Bishop’s Shield is a fiercely contested annual public speaking competition between the four Catholic Secondary School in the Dunedin diocese. The prestige event, in its 68th year, includes debating, drama, scripture reading and prepared and impromptu speeches. Bishop Colin Campbell speaks from experience when he describes the Bishop Shield has a “venerable history” as he himself was a participant in the event over 50 years ago. Leading the charge for St Peter’s is Head Girl Alice Wilkins who’s outstanding contributions in drama and the prepared speech have been at the forefront of St Peter’s most recent successes.
