The topic of the senior prepared speech at this year’s Bishop’s Shield was the Centenary of the Outbreak of the Great War. During her speech, Emily Welch asked what it was that the Catholic Church in New Zealand was doing to commemorate this event. Inspired by this, Tony Hanning, editor of the Tablet, “reflected on the fact that of the advance group of about 1300 New Zealand recruits in 1914, 500 were young Catholics”. The challenge was then put to young people of the diocese to remember these young men by attending the Mass on the first Sunday of every month beginning on All Souls Day, Sunday 2 November 2014 and ending on Armistice Day 2018. On All Souls Day a group of about 25 students from St Peter’s College attended Mass at the Blessed Sacrament Church to support Emily and the 500 Club. We acknowledge their commitment and wish all the members of the 500 Club well.
