Southland Junior Adventure Race 2023

Posted Wednesday November 29, 2023

The Southland Tri Club hosted this awesome event, held over two days with 688 kids competing as part of 172 teams from schools all over Otago and Southland. Each team of four were racing to be the first team to complete the 3-course race around the Oreti Sands Golf Couse (and surrounds) out at Otatara. Each team had to navigate their way round by kayaking, biking and trekking, finding markers using a topo map to locate these points.

St Peter’s entered 10 teams, six in the Year 7 & 8 age group and four in the Year 9 & 10 age group. It was awesome to see all the participants being put outside their comfort zones and pushing through together to get the courses completed.

Congratulations to all our teams who competed, an awesome effort from everyone to get across the finish line. Full results can be viewed on the Southand Tri Club website.

Year 7 & 8 Results: SPC Top Result out of 105 Teams.

SPC All Blacks – Max Wiegersma, Jack Wilkins, Max Richardson and George McFadzien crossed the line with a time of 2hrs 36mins, in 5th place.

The Hard Luck prize goes to the SPC Warriors – Zavier Hansen, Mason Chittock, Moss Wilson and Jackson White. Although finishing with a cracking time of 2hrs 30mins which would have placed them second, they stamped one marker in the wrong place (having one point deducted from the overall tally). Unfortunately, the scorers were unable to record it. A lesson to be learnt for next year, lads.

Year 9 & 10 Results: SPC Top Result out of 67 Teams.

SPC Strikers – Courtney White, Jess Drummond, Matilda Gemmill and Isla Hailes finished in a time of 2hrs 35mins in 13th place.

Thank you to all our amazing parents who helped transport students and bikes to the event and supported our teams during the day.

The SPC Bike trailer was put to good use transporting 20 bikes to the event; a truly awesome bit of kit that all other schools were a bit jealous of.

Also, a huge thanks to Mr Sanson and Miss Cowan who were on point throughout the day keeping the transition area moving and providing valuable support to all our teams.
