Congratulations to the following St Peter’s students who are team members of the Southland Hockey U13 Hatch Team; Ben Aynsley, Jayden Stevenson, Maclean Sharp, Ted Nelson, Tom Nicholson and Josh Lawton. The boys headed to Christchurch in the second week of the holidays to compete in the NZ Hockey Tournament. They drew a really tough pool with their first two games against Wellington, which they drew 2 all. They then played Auckland and held to a 2-0 loss, only through sheer determination. They went on to have an awesome win against Mid Canterbury 3-1 with Maclean scoring 2 excellent goals. This meant they were in 4th place going into the quarter finals which was a massive achievement. A nil all draw with Canterbury B was another gutsy effort.
Unfortunately they went down to Manawatu (3-2 in extra time) and Manukau-Counties in another close game. They all played so well with Ted Nelson a real workhorse in the defensive, and Josh and Tom getting lots of ball time.
They had a final win against Wairarapa 2-1 with Ben scoring a great goal and Jayden consistently outplaying his opponents. A huge thanks to Vince Aynsley and Graham McBeath for the super coaching.
The team were awarded the “Umpires Trophy” which goes to the team (and Coaches) that showed the best Fairplay attitude towards Umpires, opposition teams and their own teammates, which was very special. It was last won by a Southland team in 1984. Well done boys!
