Netball Tournament Week

Another day, another adventure for the Senior A, Netballers.

The St Peter’s College Senior A Netball team headed off on Sunday August 27th, for an exhilarating week of South Island Secondary School (SISS) competition.

Our first pool saw three tough games with narrow losses against Southland Girls High school, Villa Maria (Christchurch) College, and Craighead College, but keeping spirits high we set out hungry for a win on Tuesday afternoon. We set our sights on the game against Marion (Christchurch) College and came out firing. For the start it was going goal for goal but slowly and steadily we pulled away to take the healthy win which concluded the day. Our team moto is “St Pete’s defeats, do the mahi get the treats”, so we certainly earned the treat of going out to do an ‘Escape Room’ after all the mahi we’d done that day. Stealthy, sleuthing and slick is how I would describe my escape room team as we successfully solved the clues and extracted the diamond from the bank’s clutches.

On Wednesday morning the game was afoot against Taieri College. From cautions to rough play, we were in for a doozey. However, the Taieri side was no match for our team’s quick wit and even quicker feet. We took the well-earned and convincing win.

For the last round-robin game in our second pool, we played Geraldine who we quickly realised were out to stake their claim on this game. The tug of war for the win was real, we tugged, they tugged, we tugged harder, they tugged harder again. The tension was finally released as they took the narrow win 28-29. Because of the one-point difference, our team received a bonus point still placing us at the top of our second pool which put us into the play offs for 17th -20th that we would play the next day.

The last day of tournament came around quick and an early 8:30am game had us up and looking Rangi Ruru (Christchurch) College right in the face. They came out strong making the score 19-25 to them at three quarter time, but our team still had some fight left in them and we got the score back to level as the last few seconds of the game slowly ticked down. It was their centre pass. Our amazing defence gave them a run for their money but in the end, in the last 5 seconds, their goal went in and they won 31-32.

This meant that we were now playing off in our last game for 19th and 20th…. against our Catholic arch nemesis, St Kevin’s College. Right from the first whistle St Peter’s dominated the court and snatched the win 27-36, earning our placing of 19th out of 74 South Island teams. After the game there were photos and tears, or rather dust in the eyes, as three of us Year 13’s realised that that was the last time we’d wear the St Peter’s dress; but what a brilliant week it had been.

On behalf of the team, especially the three of us leaving Year 13’s, I’d like to sincerely thank our coach Hemaima Eichstaedt, our Manager Carolyn Hunter, Rebecca Chittock, Janelle Conlan and all the parent help for their dedication, time and effort that they have poured into this team not only this year, but in all previous years too. We really have appreciated all that you have done.
