The last few weeks have been full-on in the sporting world as our Winter sports seasons wrap up, with SPC teams featuring strongly in many finals. Attention has now turned to Tournament Week, where our teams have been out representing the college with pride.
Last Sunday, three teams hit the road for their respective tournaments:
🏉 U15 Rugby
The U15 Rugby Team travelled to Oamaru for the South Island Secondary Schools U15 Co-Ed Rugby Tournament. The boys impressed both on and off the field, winning all their pool games and finishing top of their grade on points. On the final day they faced a highly ranked Division 1 side. After three intense days of rugby, the team had little left in the tank and went down in that match. Still, it was a fantastic tournament and an awesome effort all round — well done lads!
🏉 Year 9 & 10 Girls Rugby
Meanwhile, our Year 9 & 10 Girls took part in the Southern Region Girls 10’s Tournament and quickly found their stride. They won all four of their pool matches convincingly against some big schools from Otago and Southland before advancing to the final. Although they went down in that last game, four wins from five matches is a brilliant result — congratulations girls!
🏐 Senior A Netball
Our Senior A Netball Team competed at the South Island Secondary Schools Tournament in Dunedin across four action-packed days. There were plenty of positives with solid wins against some big-name netball schools, as well as some nail-biting close losses. The team will regroup and rebuild, with eyes set on an even bigger campaign next year when the tournament heads to Nelson.
🏑 Senior Mixed Hockey
Also in Dunedin, our Senior Mixed Hockey Team took to the field. With a relatively new-looking side this season, results were mixed, but the development and growth shown across the week were hugely encouraging as they look ahead to next year.
🏀 Senior Boys Basketball
For the first time, SPC entered a Senior Boys Basketball Team into the Southern Cup, contested by schools from across the South Island. The boys faced two hard-fought games every day for three days straight, giving them valuable experience and a taste of the level of competition. An outstanding learning opportunity — and one we hope to build on in future tournaments.
Finally, we wish our U13 Rugby Team all the very best as they head to Queenstown this Friday for their tournament. Go well team!
