Millie McFadzien shines at Southland Young Enterprise Regional Finals

Posted Monday November 3, 2025

As part of the Year 12 and 13 Business Studies course, students are given the opportunity to participate in the Young Enterprise Scheme. This is a national competition where teams design, market and sell innovative business solutions throughout the year.

Teams must complete four tasks, and those with the highest scores are invited to go to the regional finals.

The Lost Larder, a business created and run by Millie McFadzien, was nominated for four of five sub-categories at the Southland regional finals, held in Invercargill on 29th October.

Millie has worked tirelessly all year and has collaborated with a number of professionals to get her first product (Eel Pate) to market.  Her mahi was rewarded when she was announced as the winner in three categories.

These were: Vet South - Primary Industry Award, Rio Tinto NZAS - Sales and Marketing Award, Community Trust of Southland Young Entrepreneur of the year award.

The six highest scoring YES businesses across Murihiku/Southland also had an opportunity to give a five-minute pitch, followed by three minutes of questions to a panel of six judges.  Millie's business, 'The Lost Larder' was awarded the prestigious honour of 'McIntyre Dick - Young Enterprise Southland Company of the Year'.

This is a fantastic result for Millie, as she has completed all four YES challenges on her own, competing against many other businesses which have between two and eight students.

Millie now travels to Wellington for the National finals on the 4th December - best of luck Millie!
