The end of term one has come around rather quickly, and I first wish to thank all those coaches, parents and volunteers who have supported our various extracurricular activities in term one. Thank you for volunteering your time, expertise and energy to ensure that our students are able to enjoy various artistic, cultural and sporting endeavours. Without your time, we would not be able to offer these opportunities.
Our annual Senior Quad tournament was held this week in Dunedin. Thank you to all the coaches and managers involved in this tournament. A special thanks to Mrs Chittock who organised all the logistics for the day. The students all represented the College well, and the hockey team performed exceptionally well winning all of their games. This tournament is a great way to bring together the four catholic colleges of the Dunedin Diocese.
In the last school newsletter, I highlighted the issue of the staff carpark area being used for picking up students. There have been a couple of close calls recently and to ensure that we are providing a safe environment for our students the School Board has decided that this area will be cordoned off in the afternoons for the duration of Term Two. Please refer to the letter that was emailed out on 1st of April for additional details around this change.
Last weekend we celebrated Ms Prue Scorgie’s 50 years of dedicated service to St Peter’s College. She very much enjoyed the evening event at Croydon Lodge and the opportunity to reconnect with past staff and students. A real highlight were the video messages from our Prime Minister, Minister of Education, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Former Prime Minister Sir Bill English. A special thank you to the organising committee who made this event possible and ensured that Prue’s unique milestone was celebrated appropriately.
I ask that you keep Fr Aidan Cunningham the last of the Romsinian Fathers who staffed the College for many years in your prayers. He has recently been unwell and undergone a significant medical procedure. Fr Aidan continues to take a great interest in the College and joined us for the opening mass. He was intending to join us for Ms Scorgie’s 50th celebration but due to health complications he could not. Your prayers for Fr Aidan are very much appreciated.
As we begin the school holidays, I wish all our students and staff a safe and enjoyable break. Hopefully you can take the time to have some rest, reconnect with family and friends and prepare for term two. A reminder that we will be switching into the school's winter uniform for next term.
The season of Easter and most especially Holy Week presents us every year with an opportunity to stop and reflect on the deeper questions of life. It is an excellent time to ponder the question that Jesus asks his disciples “Who do you say I am” (Matthew 16:15). To which Peter replies, “You are the Messiah, the Son of the living God” (Matthew 16:16). Given this school is named after St Peter, one would hope that our reply to that question might be the same or similar. Wishing you all a truly blessed and holy Easter.
