Golden Jubilee

On Sunday the 4th of May, Allen, Deputy Head Girl Mikee, one of our prefects Shalvi and I accompanied Mr Udy and some long serving past and present staff on a van trip to Sacred Heart Church, North East Valley, Dunedin. This was to celebrate the 50th Jubilee of Father Aiden Cunnigham’s ordination as a Priest in Rome.

Father Aiden has a very special and important role in the history in our community as he used to teach at St Peter’s.  He arrived in New Zealand with Father Michael Hill in February of 1970 as a brother and during his early days at St Peter’s was ordained as a priest in 1975. While here he taught mostly English as well as other subjects and was well known for his sense of humour and intellect and was appreciated at St Peter’s by all. Father Aiden left St Peter’s in 1994 and is currently Parish Priest at Sacred Heart in Dunedin.

The 7am start on a cold and foggy morning and the less-than-warm trip in the van was absolutely worth it to be part of the Mass with Father Aidan and his parishioners.  He is clearly well loved by his community, and it was special to be part of the morning.  It was good too to meet former Principal and School Board member Mr John Hogue who was there too.

Congratulations Father Aiden and thank you for your commitment and service to St Peter’s!
