On Sunday 29th June the Intermediate A Netball Team hit the road, heading for Christchurch to compete at the South Island Secondary Schools Junior (Yr 9&10) Netball Champs.  The Team would play 8 games over 4 days at the awesome indoor facility – Ngā Puna Wai Sports Hub.

The first goal for the Team was to make the Top 16, which meant we needed to win at least 2 of our 4 pool games to go through. Our first game of the tournament was to be against Riccarton High School, but unfortunately, they had to default to us so we won this game without having to even take the court. The afternoon couldn't come quick enough, and we played Buller High School taking the win 23 – 18.

Day Two and first we met Ellesmere, a good win for us by 37 – 29. This meant that we were through to the Top 16. Exciting! Our second game on day 2 was against Hornby High School and this was really tough. The game swung in each other’s favor each quarter and at the end whistle were just behind on the scoreboard 26 – 24.

Day 3: Wednesday 2nd July had us meeting our neighbours Menzies College first up with the St Peter’s College girls taking a good win 34 – 24 and then it was on to the second game of the day against Waitaki Girls where we won 28 – 21. We were then eagerly awaiting other results from cross-over play to see who we would meet next. The game was announced, and we would meet Māruawai College! Māruawai got off to a bolter of a start and put 4 goals on us before we could even switch into gear. We slowly grinded their lead out and it was super close through the next 2 quarters before Māruawai got a few more in a row at the end to take the win 30 – 23. This meant that we would be playing off for 3rd & 4th position the next day.

Day 4: Thursday 3rd July would see us meet Christchurch Cathedral College. The team was ready to go and they did exceptionally well to keep their composure as CCC brought a new level of physical man on man marking that saw our girls ending up on the floor more often than not. St Peter’s College came away with a gritty, well-deserved win 26 – 25 win and took 3rd place in the Combined section out of 32 Teams. An awesome achievement.

Thank you very much to our wonderful coaches, Caci Young and Sarah McLellan for all the time and effort you have put into this group of girls. Your passion was evident, and they fed off your excitement.

Thanks also to Molly Cook. To enter this tournament each team needs to bring an umpire and we were very lucky to have Molly with us for the week. Molly did an awesome job out on court and was awarded umpire of the playoff for 5th & 6th place.

Finally, a big thank you to all our supporters. Both courtside and from home. The team appreciated all your words of wisdom and support.
