We had three teams competing at the Southland Regional Schools’ Debating competition at James Hargest College over the weekend, up against around 25 teams from across the Southland region.
Our junior team was made up of Tomas Kortbaoui, Max Matthews and Lily Gemmill.
Our senior debaters were Matilda McLeod, Clodagh and Eilish Greene, Rehansa Karunaratne, Matilda Gemmill, Julia Morus and Anthony Lambert.
Our team scores were 1/3, 2/3, and an impressive 3/3 for our senior girls. They debated well but lost to a split decision, to Southland Girls' High School in the semi-final. What an achievement!
A special congratulations to Matilda McLeod, who received a Highly Commended award for being one of the top speakers in the tournament, and earned a place in the New Zealand Schools' Debating Society Southland Development Squad.
