This week in the Gateway Department, students completed their Safety Matters course, prior to heading out to work. This is a good general course that allows students to gain understanding on how to conduct themselves safely in the workplace. Students on completing the course to a satisfactory level can gain credits towards their NCEA.
We also hosted Dan Gread, Liaison Officer from the University of Canterbury, this week. Seven students came to hear what programmes are available at the University of Canterbury. Other institutions will follow on with their presentations as the year progresses. Later in the year when students firm up their plans, course planning sessions will then take place with the student’s chosen institution. Its not too early to start considering holiday courses. SIT is running a Liquor Licensing course in the April School holidays. This is a two-day course on Monday, 20th April and Thursday, 23rd April. Students will gain credits and is an important qualification for those intending to get their Managers Certificate. See Mrs Delahunt to enrol.

While thinking about online behaviour and devices, it’s probably good at this end of the year to remind everyone about the use of mobile phones here at school.
Students are permitted to have mobile phones at school, but they are only allowed to be out in classrooms at the request of teaching staff. All students have access to keyboard devices for teaching and learning purposes and phones are only to be out of bags and visible when needed. This might be to take photos of work, experiments etc. If students are feeling unwell our process is that they should tell the classroom teacher who will send them to sickbay. If a student needs to be picked up, the ladies in the School Office will call parents to ask for this to happen. It is important that teaching and learning time is maximised in the classroom. Please do not call or text students during class time. The temptation to check one’s phone when it vibrates is huge for students, and not helpful when trying to get through work. If you have any questions about either the Whanau Evening or the use of mobile phones at school, please do contact me. It’s that time of the year when things are finally beginning to settle and it would be good for teachers and whanau to meet up and check in that things are going well for our young people here at St Peter’s College. We’d like to invite you to join us for our Whanau Evening this coming Thursday 27 February. Tea and coffee will be available in the Hall from 6.30pm. We’ll begin the more formal gathering at 6.45pm with a welcome from our Principal Mrs Quinney and we should be all done by 8pm. During the course of the evening there will be an opportunity to meet the Learning Tutors from years 7 to 10 as well as the Form Teachers of these year levels. However, whanau of ALL year levels are invited to attend this evening as we are very fortunate to have John Parsons with us on the night. Many of you will have met John before, but every year he presents on different aspects of Cyber-Safety as it is an evolving area. This year John will work with students and staff on the topic of bullying and address the ideas of bad behaviour and bullying online, and the ramifications of these. He touched on this last year when he elaborated on the Harmful Digital Communications Act and what it means for everyone in New Zealand. This theme of bad behaviour and online bullying will be the focus of John’s talk with whanau too. We look forward to seeing you on Thursday! Sec School Boys Supersmash Cricket—17 February

We welcomed our new Principal Tara Quinney, new staff and students, along with the blessing of the badges for the Year 13’s of 2020. Father Michael Hill, Father Aiden Cunningham, and College Chaplin Father Damian Wynn-Williams, also joined us for the Mass, as well as the wider school community including the Year 13 parents. |
