The return to school under Alert Level 2 does not mean an immediate return to community sport, unfortunately. With the 10-person gathering limits that are currently in place all winter codes have agreed to a three-phase return to sport.
Phase 1 – Get Ready to Play Phase 2 – Prepare to Play Phase 3 – Return to Play The Get Ready to Play phase (the phase we are currently in) is where community sports groups and facilities plan the measures that need to be taken to ensure they are prepared to safely move into the Prepare to Play phase. These measures include what must be done to meet guidelines in place for contact tracing, physical distancing, and hygiene and sanitation requirements. It is at the Prepare to Play stage that sports practices are likely to begin and when school netball and basketball trials will be completed. The exact timings regarding when training can commence will be subject to government updates on numbers permitted for grassroots sport. Phase 3 is when we return to regular sports competition. No dates have been confirmed for Return to Play, but we are anticipating competitions starting at either the end of Term 2 or the beginning of Term 3. These dates will be determined by the various sporting organisations based on advice from Sports NZ and government ministries. While we wait to get to Phase 2 – Prepare to Play, it is an ideal time to work on your personal fitness. We encourage students to maintain a good level of fitness to reduce the chances of injury when we move into Phase 2 and beyond. Please check the St Peter’s College Sport Facebook page for regular updates related to the resumption of sports. Thank you for your patience. Kathryn Pinckney Sports Coordinator Basketball We are still taking registrations for basketball for the 2020 season. If your child would like to play this season, they can register by adding their name to the list in the Fish Bowl. We are very short of basketball coaches again this season. Each team needs to have a coach/manager, otherwise the teams cannot be entered. If you can help, please contact Kathryn Pinckney on kathrynpinckney@stpetersgore.school.nz
