Year 10 Market Day...

Read Now

The Year 10 Commerce class held their Market Day last week.  After a lot of hard work planning, compromising and communicating, the Year 10s ended their ‘hands on’ unit of work by running Market Day for the whole school.  Students worked in groups to design, produce, market and sell a product of their choice.  The learning is student-centered where each group is responsible for making their own decisions, problem solving, meeting deadlines, preparing a plan, relating to others and engaging with the school community.
Thank you to all the parents who supported their children and the wonderful students who were not in the class but who helped out various groups on the day to enable things to run more smoothly.
Annie Chamberlain - Teacher of Commerce

We have so much to be grateful for – a wonderful term of opportunities, achievements, successes, and much happiness. Along with many of our staff, students and parents, I truly enjoyed the chance to be part of the Senior Catholic Secondary Schools’ Sports Tournament last Sunday and Monday. We are very fortunate as a Catholic school to be part of a network of schools who all have the same foundations and values. This commonality is very obvious when the students come together during sports tournaments and public speaking competitions every year. There is a natural connection and relationships forged that will continue from year to year. This is community at its best.

I enjoyed the chance to accompany thirty of our senior students to the Leadership Day held on Easter Tuesday. I am proud of the fact that this was a school holiday, yet so many of our young men and women committed to attending this day. We all had plenty of fun and I am sure they have taken away plenty of new skills ideas to use within their personal leadership journeys.

It was certainly busy last weekend. We had a senior group away at the South Island Secondary Schools’ Adventure Race, the year 7&8s were involved in the Southland Primary Athletics, and we had a very successful team attend the Southland Schools’ Swimming Championships. You can read about their successes further in this newsletter. Thank you all for representing St Peter’s so well. Good luck to our Rugby 7s team which competes in the Southland finals today.

Have a wonderful holiday and I look forward to seeing everyone back safely on Monday, April 30th.

Ordination of Bishop-elect Michael Dooley

On Thursday, April the 26th at 6.00pm Fr Michael Dooley will be ordained the 7th Bishop of our Otago-Southland Diocese in the Dunedin Town Hall. Everyone is very welcome to attend and we encourage families from our school to be there with students wearing their school uniform. While the Mass will be a little longer than usual the Town Hall has plenty of space if younger children are getting restless. It will be wonderful to gather with families and parishioners from all over our Diocese.

Tertiary Providers visit...

Read Now

Tertiary providers are continuing to visit the school and talk to Year 13’s about attending polytechnics or universities next year.  This week we have had sessions with Lincoln University, Otago University, Victoria University and  last week Otago Polytechnic came and spoke about their programmes. These visits are a chance for students to get a good overview as to what each university/polytechnic provides and get information on entry requirements, scholarships and accommodation.

Arohanui Award...

Read Now

The Arohanui Award has been developed for the first time this year to celebrate the fact that many of our students do quite remarkable things in our community and beyond, simply because they see a need and they know it they can make a difference in someone else’s world. Often they do these things quietly behind the scenes for no reward or recognition but in doing so, they demonstrate the meaning of Arohanui and show ‘much love, with deep affection’ for they fellow human beings.
At the end of each term, St Peters College presents 2 students an ‘Arohanui Cross’ and gift on behalf of the school community. Awards this term will go to Jay Talemaicakaudrove and Kate Perkins.
Jay has been presented the Arohanui award for showing commitment to our school culture and sportsmanship, along with showing compassion and empathy for others.  At our athletics day, Jay ran the 200m with one of our international students for whom the athletics day was out of his comfort zone. Jay allowed him to win without thinking that he'd let him and then gave him a massive high five and congratulations on the finish line. All of the staff on the track noted this awesome act and essentially he had supported this student to win the 200m heat and experience success.
Kate has received her award for showing compassion and commitment during her family holiday in Fiji last year. Kate made coffee with their coffee machine and sold it to fundraise money for the kids at the village near Octopus Resort in the Yasawa Islands in Fiji where they were going to stay. She raised $100 which she used to buy books, colouring pencils, pens and a sheep for the children when she visited the village.  What is more, Kate has plans to continue this fundraising to buy clothes and shoes for those same children.
