Last Friday, August 10th, the 75th Bishop’s Shield Public Speaking Competition began at 7pm, in the Church of the Blessed Sacrament.  After the excitement of seeing all our old friends from Kavanagh, Verdon and St Kevin’s Colleges, we began with the first event -  Prepared speech, in which our very own Dakoda Conroy came 1st, (much to the delight of her coach Mrs Kate Nicholson).  It was a fantastic start to the competition. The next morning, we started at 9am with the 1st Junior Debate, St Kevin's vs St Peter’s, (coached by Mr Brendan Terry). We came out on top of that, and placed second overall in the Junior Debate section. Early in the afternoon the St Peter’s Senior Debate team, (also coached by Mr Brendan Terry) went up against Verdon College. Once again we came out on top  in the debate placing second overall in the Senior Debate section. Following the debate St Peter’s Lucy Swain, (coached by Mrs Katie O’Connor), came 1st in Impromptu Speech. We then won the Junior Drama, (coached by Miss Rosie Hickey) and came 3rd in Senior Drama, (coached by Mr Nathan Munn). After this long day, we headed home, ready for the final day. On Sunday, Hannah Crowley, (coached by Mrs Christina McCormick) took out the Junior Scripture section and after Mass, Grace Turpia, (coached by Mrs Bridget Ryan) won both the Scripture Readings and the Study Questions to give St Peter’s two more firsts under our belts. At Prize-giving, the scale of our win became apparent as we were buried under the various cups handed out. We came first by a margin of 11 points, with St Kevin’s coming in second. After a farewell to our fellow competitors, we all headed home to catch up on all the sleep we had missed out on after three weeks of hard work. Thanks to everyone who coached us, the organisers and of course Mr Brendan Terry for all the encouragement.
